Winter Bible Study Announced
“Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.” I Peter 3:16 NRSV
“People who do not believe are living all around you. They might say that you are doing wrong. So live good lives. Then they will see the good things you do, and they will give glory to God on the day when Christ comes again.” I Peter 2:12 ICB
Peter repeatedly refers to the recipients of his letter as “exiles” and “aliens.” They live in a society where they don’t quite fit in, a world that views them with distrust, if not outright hostility. Because Christians refuse to worship the gods of Rome, they are accused of atheism and unpatriotic behavior. Roman society was hierarchical and patriarchal. Christians were accused of upsetting the social order with their ideas about “freedom in Christ.” What should Christians do in such an environment? Should they “go along to get along” and conform to the society around them? Should they retreat from the world?
And what should Christians in America do today? “In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace,” is the headline for a recent Pew Forum report. In a society where fewer people identify themselves as Christian and even fewer attend church on a regular basis, it’s not surprising if church-going Christians feel like they don’t quite fit in. How do we live good lives in such a world?
You are invited to explore the issues of being a Christian in a non-Christian/post-Christian society through a 7-week study of I Peter. There are two Monday evening groups that meet at the church from 7-8:30 p.m. beginning January 13. A Friday morning group also meets at the church from 10-11:30 a.m. beginning January 17. You can sign up for Bible study January 5 (Star Sunday) or January 12, or anytime the church office is open. There is an optional study guide available for purchase, but it is not required. You can order a study guide when you sign up, and pay for it at the first session. Otherwise, just come and join us!
